It’s not too late to plan holiday travel, but it’s getting close to be. There really are no more ‘last minute deals’ when it comes to travel. Airlines are consistenly filling planes, cruise lines are mostly entirely full months in advance. People are travelling again, and the world is open, so many are catching up on all the missed travel plans over the last few years.
Becky's Best Holiday Travel Tips
By Air
- When planning flights, leave extra time for layovers, at least 90 minutes or longer.
- If you have to have a layover, choose a southern city if possible.
- Make sure to leave more time for airport check in and security than normal - 90 mins for domestic, 120+ mins for international.
- Fly direct if possible!!
- Try not to choose the last flight out of the day. This way, in the event of a delay or cancellation, you still have the chance to get on another flight.
- Ship gifts, etc ahead of time so you don't have to bring with you on the plane in checked bags or carry-ons!
- Checking a bag(s) can make travelling so much easier. Pack ALL liquids and gels in a ziplock bag (and bring extra). In your carry-on, pack at least 1 day's worth of clothes, in the event your checked bag(s) is delayed in getting to you at your destination.
By Car
- Choose to drive when there are less drivers on the road.
- Check your tires air pressure to get to the best MPG on your trip.
- Plan your route deliberately - take in the side roads, the scenic route.
- Let everyone add songs to your travel playlist!
- Bring plenty of snacks, drinks and trash bags and wipes!
- Be sure to stop often, stretch your legs, get some fresh air, take in a sight or two, use a restroom, and refresh with a cool drink or snack!
- If travelling with a furry family member, don't forget about them! Dogs need to run around a bit and also enjoy some water and treats!
- While most GPS routes are good, be sure to double check. GPS routes are planned using an algorithm, which doesn't always beat out common sense. You may know or see that the route selected will not be the best/shortest/fastest, so check it out before you depart if you should take a different route at some point in your journey.
However you travel, enjoy the journey!
Choose comfortable and appropriate travel clothes. Nothing is worse than having hours of travel and you’re not comfortable!
Bring your camera (or use your phone) and be sure to capture the sights along the way. The best moments are the ones not planned for, so be sure to capture those! I am guilty of just living in the moment – which there is a lot to be said for – and not always getting the photos or videos to remember it by. So be sure to pack your batteries, chargers and cords so you are charged and ready!!
